A Kid-Friendly November Weekend in Bradford: Trails, Story Time and a Warm Pool
By Jennifer Jones · October 31, 2026

The first Saturday of November always feels like a reset. The pumpkins are coming off the porch, the clocks are about to fall back, and every parent I know is asking the same question: what do we do with the kids now that it's cold?
A couple of years ago, I helped a young family (let's call them Daniela and Marco) move up to Bradford from a condo in the city with their two boys, Mateo and Lucas. Marco worried the boys would be bored "out in the country" once the weather turned. By their first November, he'd texted me a photo of both boys asleep in the back seat after a full Saturday. Here's the kind of day they'd put together, and it's one any family in Bradford West Gwillimbury can borrow.
Morning: Fresh air at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area
Start while everyone still has energy. Scanlon Creek Conservation Area, run by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority at 2450 9th Line, covers roughly 300 hectares of forest, marsh and trail just east of town.
- Discovery Play Garden: a nature-themed playground that little ones love.
- Trails for every set of legs: the Main Loop is about 3.5 km (moderate), with shorter loops like the 2 km Sugar Maple Loop for smaller hikers.
- Big views: lookouts over the Holland Marsh, plus a boardwalk and bridges over Scanlon Creek.
- Washrooms and picnic pavilions make it easy with kids.
Pack mitts and a thermos. November trails can be muddy, so rubber boots are your friend. One note for dog owners: the old Scanlon Creek Bark Park is now permanently closed, so check LSRCA's rules before bringing a pup.
Midday: Story time at the BWG Public Library
Warm up at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library at 425 Holland Street West. The library runs free children's and family programs, and most are drop-in (children under 10 need an adult with them). Past line-ups have included baby story times, Reads & Rhymes for preschoolers and French stories and games for school-age kids.
Mark your calendar: the library lists a Kids Diwali Celebration on Saturday, November 21, 1–3 PM. It's a lovely way to celebrate the festival of lights with your little ones.
Daniela's tip: let the kids pick a stack of books to take home for the week. It makes the drive feel like a treat.
Afternoon: Swim (or skate) at the BWG Leisure Centre
When the sun drops early, head indoors to the BWG Leisure Centre at 2500 Line 8. The Bradford Lions Aquatic Centre has three pools:
- an 8-lane, 25-metre lap pool,
- a warm leisure pool with a slide and water features, and
- a warm-water relaxation pool.
Drop-in Leisure Swim and Parent & Tot Swim times are on the Town's online calendar, along with drop-in skating/shinny and gym times. The Town lists drop-in swim rates at $4.25 for kids 4–12, free for toddlers 0–3, and a $13 household rate for up to five people. Kids need to be 48" tall and pass a quick swim test to ride the slide.
Mateo and Lucas called this "the best part," every single time.
Bonus: A little holiday sparkle at Bradford Greenhouses
If everyone still has some energy, Bradford Greenhouses Garden Gallery at 3817 County Road 4 turns into a holiday wonderland in November. Wandering the displays is a free, cozy way to finish the day. Regular hours are Monday to Saturday 9 AM–6 PM and Sunday 9 AM–5 PM. Heads-up: their Christmas Soirée (Friday, November 6) is a 19+ evening, so save that one for date night. Santa photos at the Bradford location are scheduled for December 5 and 12.
Hours, programs and prices can change, so please check each organizer's website before you go.
Why families love Bradford
Days like this are a big part of why families choose Bradford West Gwillimbury. You get trails, a great library and a modern rec centre within minutes of each other, and Highway 400 and the GO train are close by. Daniela and Marco still say the move gave them more space and more time together.
