A Dog-Friendly November Saturday in Barrie: Bayview, Sunnidale and Room to Run
By Jennifer Jones · November 7, 2026
The first cool Saturday of November always feels like a gift. The leaves are mostly down, the summer crowds are gone, and every dog parent I know is asking the same thing: where can we let them run before the snow arrives?
A few seasons ago, I helped a young couple (let's call them Priya and Jamal) move from a downtown condo to a house in Barrie's south end with their rescue pup, Scout. Jamal worried Scout would go stir-crazy once the weather turned. By their second November, he'd texted me a muddy, happy photo of Scout after a full Saturday at Barrie's off-leash parks. Here's the kind of day they put together—and one any dog family in South & Central Ontario can borrow.
Morning: Bayview Drive Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area
Start while Scout still has rocket fuel. The Bayview Drive DOLRA sits at 555 Bayview Drive, right beside Sadlon Arena. The City of Barrie describes three separate fenced areas:
- a westernmost 1-acre fenced pen with access to the small-dog pen and trail systems,
- a middle 0.25-acre pen reserved for small dogs (maximum 30 pounds), and
- an easternmost 1.8-acre pen open to dogs of any size.
There's also a natural area beyond the pens where dogs may be off-leash, though the City notes it is not fully secure (gaps under the fence from uneven ground and waterflow), so pick what fits your dog.
Parking tip: the closest lot is usually the north arena lot, with the south-east lot as a backup when arena events fill the north. Right now the City also flags that the new YMCA community centre construction affects parking and access—the DOLRA stays open, but entry is currently through the west end gate closest to Sadlon Arena. Give yourself a few extra minutes to park and walk in.
Midday: Sunnidale Park's rolling off-leash trails
After a water break and a coffee for the humans, head to Sunnidale Park DOLRA, between Sunnidale Road and Coulter Street. This one is different: about 7.15 acres of natural, rolling ground with earthen footpaths, double-gated with 4-foot wire mesh fencing. It is not wheelchair accessible. The City upgraded trails, added two permanent bridges and new benches in 2020.
Parking is listed at the Dorian Parker Centre lot (227 Sunnidale Road), along Sunnidale Road, and at Coulter Street. The City previously closed the Coulter Street lot for stormwater work into late October—please check the City page for the latest access note before you go. Access from Sunnidale Road has remained available.
Priya's tip: bring a towel for the car. November clay sticks to everything Scout loves.
A few City rules worth knowing
Both DOLRAs are unsupervised. Per the City of Barrie:
- leash your dog when entering and exiting,
- stay present and in view, with a leash for each dog (max two dogs per owner),
- pick up and dispose of waste in the receptacles,
- keep dogs registered and up to date on rabies vaccination,
- watch for poison ivy in naturalized areas (oil can transfer on fur), and
- remember DOLRAs are not recommended for children under 18—if kids come, supervise them closely.
Outside the DOLRAs, Barrie's Animal Control By-law requires dogs on a leash of six feet or less in most non-waterfront parks. Always confirm current rules on the City site before you go.
Why dog families love Barrie
Days like this are a big part of why pet parents choose Barrie and the rest of Simcoe County. You get two official off-leash areas with different vibes—one fenced and arena-side, one woodsy and rolling—minutes from neighbourhoods that still feel like home. Priya and Jamal still say the move gave Scout more room to run and them more weekends outdoors.
